Memories. A moment in time, frozen, forever. A beautiful sunset. People become interested in photography for different reasons. Just the term “photography” sounds a bit intimidating doesn’t it? What is the difference between a photographer and someone just snapping pictures?
For me, the main difference has nothing at all to do with the equipment you are using, but being able to capture the picture you want. When got my first DSLR camera, I thought, this is it! I now have an expensive camera. (Please understand “expensive” is a relative term.) For the purpose of this page, it simply means I had graduated from the point and shoot. I thought every picture would be pure magic and I was destined to hang masterpieces on my wall forever. As it turns out, there is a little bit more to a great pictures than the camera.
I do not consider myself a photographer. I consider myself someone who enjoys taking pictures and know a few adjustments to make on my camera. Life is full of once in a lifetime moments. Birthdays, first day of school, graduation, weddings, and so many others. I have had 2 nieces and 2 nephews graduate from high school. I always give them a book of life advice I have gathered over my years. Buy a camera and learn to use it, is always in there somewhere. Regardless of where life leads you, you are bound to encounter something you want to remember.
You don’t have to have an expensive camera with multiple lenses, flashes, filters, and all the other camera toys. Find a camera you like, are willing to carry, and learn to use it. My experience is with dslr, so I will provide a few tips in this arena. I will strongly advise reading the owner’s manual (nerd alert). After you have read that and have no idea what the manual is talking about, I suggest visiting www.digitalphotographyschool.com. Almost any topic you need more information on, they will have several articles. Grab you camera and take some pictures. See what you like and what you don’t like. I would start with learning more about the light triangle (ISO, aperture, and shutter speed). Photography is manipulating light to create and image. Understanding the relationship among the components of the light triangle is the basis of photography. Learn these first. These were just a couple pictures I grabbed off my computer. I intend to add more galleries as my pictures get a little more organize. Moving from a PC to a MAC is making the photo organization a bit daunting.
