Ode to the Stubborn Old Goats

We have, if we are lucky, all encountered, engaged, and for lack of a better description, “dealt” with a stubborn old goat. These are the older authority figures in our lives. And more often than not, the heroes.

My dad was the first SOG (Stubborn Old Goat) I encountered. Obviously, he did not start out old, but was always stubborn. He had to forge his own way from an early age and was quite used to making his own decisions. He was tall, handsome and controlled his own destiny. He got married (a few times), had (many) children. Truly a man of his own destiny and took orders from no one.

Years passed, those children, or I will speak from personal experience, this child, saw the SOG needing just a bit of guidance or help. The SOG is very anti-help. Remember, he has been in complete control of his universe since forever. My father and I clashed, epically, over how he was to see about himself. My mother, a SOG in her own right, would stand back and hope for the best.

Why would I, a mere child not only question, but demand the SOG, for once, look after himself, and not everyone else, as he had always done? Well, that is quite easy to answer, and I think I can speak for anyone that has had the joy of having a SOG in their life. The answer is of course… all those you sacrificed so unselfishly for were now grown. I realized that he needed care, concern, and looking after but he did not accept this as fact.

My father in law is the next SOG, I have encountered. He is an epitome of strength, love, and solidarity for our family. I have yet to encounter a situation that he cannot fix. He is the person who taught my husband to be an amazing father. He raised and guided the next generation of SOGs. There may come a time, in the future, that this equally loved SOG will stand against those who love him dearly, but I have little doubt, the SOG will do what he does best. Of course, this is put his family first.

Stubborn Old Goats can be a pain in the ass. Yet, they are the backbone of every family everywhere. They are, as the name implies stubborn. Yet, this stubbornness makes them as lovable as infuriating. They are the defenders of tradition, even if to their own detriment. So, if you are fortunate enough to have a SOG in your family, cherish them. They are the unseen defenders of tradition and family. However, if you happen to be the SOG of your family, you need to know the opposition comes from love. You taught us that and you have no one to blame but yourself.
